Public Enemis [2009]

This is the story of the last few years of the notorious bank robber John Dillinger. He loved what he did and could imagine little else that would make him happier. Living openly in 1930s Chicago, he had the run of the city with little fear of reprisals from the authorities. It's there that he meets Billie Frechette with whom he falls deeply in love. In parallel we meet Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent who would eventually track Dillinger down. The FBI was is in its early days and Director J. Edgar Hoover was keen to promote the clean cut image that so dominated the organization through his lifetime. Purvis realizes that if he is going to get Dillinger, he will have to use street tactics and imports appropriate men with police training. Dillinger is eventually betrayed by an acquaintance who tells the authorities just where to find him on a given night.

The Proposal [2009]

Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is the executive editor-in-chief of a book publishing company, Colden Books, who forces her assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her in order to avoid being deported to Canada. He grudgingly accepts, under the condition that he is promoted to the position of editor. When the government investigates, the two are forced to spend the weekend with his parents in Alaska in order to sell the lie. The family suggest they could marry the same weekend, and they reluctantly accept. They start to fall genuinely in love as they spend more and more time together. Because of this, during the wedding ceremony, Margaret decides she cannot do this to Andrew and confesses the business arrangement in front of everyone--including the immigration officer handling their case. She is then told that she has 24 hours to get back to Canada, and thus goes back to New York to pack her things. Upon doing so, however, Andrew shows up at the office and confesses his love for her in front of the entire office staff, proposing marriage all over again

Prozac Nation [2001]

Lizzie becomes abusive in sex and drugs, and her existential crisis and depression increases and she hurts her friends and her mother that love her, while dating Rafe. Mrs. Wurtzel sends her to an expensive psychiatric treatment with Dr. Sterling, in spite of having difficulties paying for her medical bills and therapy sessions. After a long period of treatment under medication, and suicide attempt, Lizzie stabilizes and adjusts to the real world.

Punisher: War Zone [2008]

The Promotion [2008]

THE PROMOTION is a low-key, deader than deadpan comedy-drama that fans of THE OFFICE should love. The film stars Sean William Scott (AMERICAN PIE) and John C. Reilly (TALLADEGA NIGHTS) as assistant managers dueling for the same promotion within their Chicago-area grocery chain. Doug (Scott) is initially so sure the job is his that he takes all sorts of financial risks to impress his wife (Jenna Fischer); Richard (Reilly) is a transfer from Canada with an addiction to self-help tapes, plus a druggie biker past he needs to keep under wraps as the interview process heats up and the undercutting begins. Writer-director Steve Conrad continues exploring his fascination with how average Americans measure themselves and fight for their slice of the pie, a study he began in his acclaimed screenplays for THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS and THE WEATHER MAN. As a director he's too caustic and straight-faced to be his generation's Frank Capra, but maybe that just reflects the more complex times. THE PROMOTION captures an America in regression, a land where once-certain futures are suddenly up for grabs, and the film's cagey shifts from improv-style comedy to personal drama keep one guessing all the way to the finish line. Sporting a fetching Scots accent as Richard's better half, the diminutive Lili Taylor (I SHOT ANDY WARHOL, THE ADDICTION) steals what scenes she can. The usually extroverted Scott gets props for playing his emotional cards close to the vest this time, but can't match Reilly for hangdog goofball timing.

Pineapple Express [2008]
