Hunger [2008]

The final months of Bobby Sands, the Irish Republican Army activist who protested his treatment at the hands of British prison guards with a hunger strike, are chronicled in this historical drama, the first feature film from artist turned filmmaker Steve McQueen. Davey Gillen (Brian Milligan) is an IRA volunteer who is sentenced to Belfast's infamous Maze prison, where he shares a cell with fellow IRA member Gerry Campbell (Liam McMahon). Like most of the IRA volunteers behind bars, Gillen and Campbell are subjected to frequent violence by the guards, who in turn live with the constant threat of assassination at the hands of Republicans during their off hours. Campbell and Gillen are taking part in a protest in which they and their fellow IRA inmates are refusing to wear standard prison-issue uniforms as a protest against Britain's refusal to recognize them as political prisoners, a move that is complicating their efforts to pass information among the other prisoners. As the protest fails to get results, one IRA member behind bars, Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender), decides to take a different tack and begins a hunger strike, refusing to eat until Irish officials are willing to acknowledge the IRA as a legitimate political organization. However, while Sands' protest gains the attention both inside prison walls and in the international news, not everyone believes what he's doing is right, and Sands finds himself verbally sparring with a priest (Liam Cunningham) who questions the ethics and effectiveness of the strike. Hunger received its world premiere at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened as part of the Un Certain Regard program.

Written and directed by Larry Bishop (son of Rat Packer Joey Bishop), who also stars, HELL RIDE is a tribute to the biker flicks of the late 1960s and early ‘70s. The movie follows Pistolero (Bishop) and his two captains, the Gent (Michael Madsen) and Comanche (Eric Balfour), as they booze and brawl their way across the Arizona desert, with the ultimate goal of exacting revenge on a rival gang that murdered one of their members. A healthy mix of throat slitting, coke-sniffing, and naked female oil wrestling makes HELL RIDE one of the more gratuitously sensational films of recent memory; yet if one is able to get past the almost laughably blatant tastelessness on which the movie is built, there is a fairly good time to be had. As the dapper Gent, Madsen proves once again that he could read from the phonebook and still sound like one bad dude, and tip-of-the-cap cameos from Dennis Hopper and David Carradine solidify the film's enjoyably retro/po-mo vibe. Every aspect of HELL RIDE, from the washed-out cinematography to the Link Wray-style spaghetti western surf soundtrack to the pulped-up dialogue, is hyper-stylized and blatantly self-conscious, and that is ultimately what saves the film. If there was even a trace of seriousness here the movie would be unwatchable--luckily, there isn't. Yes, it's completely offensive, and no it isn't going to win over any fans at N.O.W., but for every BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, you have to have a HELL RIDE or the whole lousy business will just crumble

The Hottest State [2006]

A coming of age tale of a young man dealing with his own broken heart, as well as his childhood broken family. His father, whom he loved, abandoned him at an early age. Throughout the story he refers to memories of his father and eventually pays him a visit. His heart is broken by a young woman who comes to New York to get away on her own and be a singer, while he tries to be an actor. She meets him and reluctantly gets involved with him, having lots of hangs up about even having sex, from fear of being dumped again, like she was by a past love. Though, she breaks down and spends a week with him in Mexico have nothing but sex, and later calling it the best time of her life. But, his intense and relentless pressure for her to commit to him as a girlfriend and even in marriage, which never comes about, drives her away. He finally, after a lot of soul searching and head banging, travels to Texas to visit his estranged father of many years and discovers he has finally faced and dealt with his heartbreak, in a key and very powerful scene with Ethan Hawke as the father..

The Happening [2008]

A pandemic of unknown cause is spreading across the northeast of the US, mysteriously within well-defined borders. Victims experience loss of speech and physical disorientation ; they freeze, and then unfreeze to commit suicide: people jump from buildings, shoot or hang themselves, one feeds himself to lions in the zoo, some cut themselves with a hairpin, barbed wire, glass, or a grass mower, drive into a tree, etc. The initial assumption that it is a terrorist attack is abandoned. Once these events start to get noticed, the pratagonist, science teacher Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg), his wife, best friend and colleague, a math teacher, and Julian's eight-year-old daughter Jess try to evacuate the city. They travel by train until the train stops at a small station in western Pennysylvania, and train services are discontinued. Julian separates from the group, trying to reach his wife, who was taking a bus to Princeton. He requests Elliot and Alma take Jess along; they agree. Julian gets a ride from a family escaping. Once they arrive in Princeton, they see that the town has been affected and find people hanging on trees. The driver, who is affected by the toxin from a tear in the car's sunroof, suddenly crashes into a tree. Julian survives the crash but, also affected, he slashes his wrists with pieces from the windshield.

Meanwhile Elliot, Alma, and Jess get a ride with a couple, of which the man explains his theory that the plants attack people as a defense mechanism. At a crossing cars with fleeing people from all directions meet. A soldier, Pvt. Auster, takes charge, and advises people to proceed on foot. Elliot, Alma, and Jess are accompanied by another group of people. Later on, Auster is affected by the toxin, and proceeds to kill himself. The group that was following Auster also proceed to do the same. Elliot's group, who are now aware of the toxin, start to run and split into three groups. Elliot, Alma, Jess, and two boys stay together until the two boys are later shot and killed by a deranged man living in a house which the group tries to enter to get some food. Elliot deduces that plants and trees produce an airborne neurotoxin when the number of people that are present is larger than a threshold, and also that this threshold is decreasing with time, but then go outside to meet, to die together. The pandemic is suddenly over, however, and all three survive. They adopt Jess (Julian's wife has died as well). Three months later, with Alma being pregnant, there is a new outbreak in Paris. Finally even isolated people are affected. Elliot, Alma, and Jess can stay in a house of a woman who lives an isolated life; however, she gets suspicious of them and tells them they have to leave the next day after she wrongly accuses Elliot of stealing. After arguing with Elliot, the woman goes outside and gets affected by the toxin, kills herself. When they realize they have to stay inside, Elliot is in the house while Alma and Jess are in the barn. They prepare to die and have a last conversation.
