Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd) has everything going for her. She's a producer of a popular daytime talk show, and is in a hot romance with the show's dashing executive producer Ray (Greg Kinnear). When Ray unexpectedly dumps her, she begins an extensive study of male behavior to try to find out what makes men tick. Her "research" leads her to become an overnight sensation/guru for single women everywhere. When Jane begins to use her womanizing roomate and co-worker Eddie (Hugh Jackman) as fodder for her research, she finds both humor and answers where they were least expected.

Control

Based on the memoir TOUCHING FROM A DISTANCE by Deborah Curtis, Anton Corbijn’s CONTROL is as near perfect a filmic telling of the story of Joy Division and Ian Curtis as any fan could hope for. It’s also a beautifully rendered piece of cinema about the crippling effects of love and regret, and the salvation we seek in art. Born out of England’s post-Sex Pistols punk explosion, Joy Division played a dark, minimalist version of the nascent sound, and became cult heroes thanks in part to their brilliant yet disturbed frontman Ian Curtis (played by an eerily perfect Sam Riley). Corbijn does a wonderful job recreating the Manchester band’s music and live show, cutting straight to the essence of Joy Division’s unique appeal. Credit must also be given to the three actors who portray the rest of Joy Division. Playing all the instruments themselves, they perfectly capture the band’s powerfully stoic presence, one that translates both live and on record into the sonic equivalent of an existential crisis.

Being John Malkovich

Craig, a puppeteer, takes a filing job in a low-ceilinged office in Manhattan. Although married to the slightly askew Lotte, he hits on a colleague, the sexually frank Maxine. She's bored but snaps awake when he finds a portal leading inside John Malkovich: for 15 minutes you see, hear, and feel whatever JM is doing, then you fall out by the New Jersey Turnpike. Maxine makes it commercial, selling trips for $200; also, she's more interested in Lotte than in Craig, but only when Lotte is inside JM. JM finds out what's going on and tries to stop it, but Craig sees the portal as his road to Maxine and to success as a puppeteer. Meanwhile, Lotte discovers others interested in the portal.
